Officer Reports

President

Joyce Hendricks called the meeting to order.  The minutes of the December 13, 2006 meeting were reviewed.  Liz Heim made a motion to correct the amount given to the library for the wish list by changing it from $10,000 to $10,413.  Seconded by Grace Housley and the motion passed.  Janis made a motion to approve the minutes as corrected.  Emily seconded the motion and it passed.

 Treasurer

Janis reported that the year end balance for 2006 was $13,760.58.  Liz made a motion to approve the report.  Linda seconded it, and the motion carried.

 Library Report

Barbara McGary formally thanked Liz Heim on behalf of the library staff and board for all her work as president of Friends.

Barbara reported that the library staff is considering implementing several programs this year including a smoking cessation program, scrapbooking program, 5 minute dating program for seniors, and a taste of the town program.  She asked for any input from the Friends group concerning which programs might be successful in Selinsgrove and will be asking for help with implementation later.

Barbara reported that One Book One Community will be done again and that several local libraries will be working together on it.

 Committee Reports

            Tree Fest

Liz reported that it was very successful this year with a total income of $2,825.19 raised.   Publicity given by local newspapers was very good and brought in 948 people.  Liz reported that we already have enough trees to use next year and that 12 people have already signed up to decorate a tree.  Emily suggested that we have the books used for Tree Fest available for sale at the event and it was agreed that this would be a good idea.

             Merchandise

Emily reported that merchandise has been selling fairly well.  There are 27 tote bags left from the 74 we bought, 22 pins are left, and 3 calendars remain from the 100 we started with.  Emily gave some of the calendars to local merchants and also to the library board.  It was suggested that a stamp or sticker be put on our merchandise with the Friends of the Library name.

Emily reported that she, Patty and Liz have discussed the possibility of having a Friends store where we could sell our merchandise and possibly used books.  There is a room available downstairs in the library.  They have discussed having it open limited hours and being staffed by Friends’ volunteers.  Emily will poll members to see if there is enough interest to pursue this idea.

             Fundraising

Joyce Bilger reported that the crocks sold out about a week before Christmas and she has been taking orders.  She requested permission to order 50 more and also to publicize that they will again be available.  It was suggested that a picture of Rod Ries who designed the crock, and Don Housley, who wrote the pamphlet, be taken with the crock to advertise its availability.  Liz made a motion that we order 50 more crocks.  Linda seconded it and the motion passed.

Joyce and Linda have discussed having a picture of Rolling Green Park on next year’s crock.  Grace will ask Rod Ries if he is willing to design the crock again.

Linda has purchased a beautiful new quilt to be used for this year’s raffle and displayed it for the Friends.

 New Business

Janis presented the check for $10,413 to Barbara McGary and a picture was taken to be used for publicity.

Liz reported that she will be speaking to the Kiwanis Club concerning the “Books for Babies” program which is available from Friends of the Library USA.  Kits containing a baby’s first board book, a bib, and a library card can be purchased from this organization.

Joyce H. and Liz are willing to speak to local organizations concerning the library in order to raise awareness of its needs and services.

Liz stated that there is a need for someone to take over the webpage, newsletter, membership database and crock database.  Patty volunteered to take over the membership database and will meet with Liz to transfer the information.

Liz requested that each member send her the names of 10 people who may be potential members of Friends.  She requested that this be done by Feb. 1st.

Liz made a motion that the meeting be adjourned, seconded by Patty, and the motion passed.  The next meeting will be held February 14, 2007.

                                                                                                             Respectfully submitted,

                                                                                                            Grace Housley
