Friends of the Selinsgrove Library Meeting Minutes 
February 14, 2007

 Present.  Joyce Bilger, Linda Wieder, Lynn Askew, Mary Schmoyer, Grace Housley, Barbara McGary, Liz Heim, Emily Johnson, Joyce Hendrick, Deborah Bernhisel.

 Joyce Bilger moved and Liz Heim seconded a motion to accept the secretary’s report as presented with a correction to the spelling of Margaret Siro’s name.  The motion carried.

 A financial report was distributed.  $325 was deposited on 50 additional crocks.  $120 was spent to purchase gift certificates for the library employees, a thank you for their assistance to Friends of the Selinsgrove Library.  The monthly financial report was accepted.

 There was no vice-president’s report.

 Lynn Askew, Liaison to the Snyder County Libraries Board, reported that the board is interviewing candidates for a new director and that the board continues to pursue construction plans for the library.

 Interim Director of the Snyder County Library, Barbara McGary, reported the following:

  • The library received the pre-school connection grant which will allow the library to set up a “permanent” area for parents and children which will provide inter-active stations and reading activities in the basement of the Community Building.
  • March 26 will be an Open House for patrons.  It will be an opportunity for training in the use of the new Polaris software.
  • There will be a Harry Potter event in July to correspond with the publication of the last Harry Potter book.
  • There is a combined Trustee/Friends meeting in Mars, Pennsylvania, April 27-28 and another one in Grantville, May 4-5.  These gatherings offer opportunities for networking with other Friends groups around the state.

Merchandise. Emily Johnson reported a visit to a local tile manufacturer.  The process could be used to print decorator tiles, which could be sold.  The process could also be used to create notepaper or stationery.  Notepaper ideas included a discussion of various architecture in and around Selinsgrove.

 Crocks.

  • The latest order is ready to pick up.  Out of the 50 recently ordered 26 are already sold.
  • There are still Governor Snyder crocks available.
  • Rolling Green Park will be the subject of the next crock.  We were able to look at the one that Rod Ries sent to the meeting.
  • An additional crock is planned for 2007-2008 in honor of Susquehanna University’s Sesquicentennial (1858-2008).  The plan has been approved by the university.  All proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Selinsgrove Library.

 Liz Heim moved and Joyce Bilger seconded a motion that we pursue a prototype for the SU Sesquicentennial crock.  The motion carried.

 Publicity. Janice presenting the $10,000 check to Barbara McGary appeared in The Daily Item, and Joyce Hendrick will pursue publication of a promo for the new crock.

 Membership. The Membership Drive began with a mailing of 340 letters on February 9.

 Book Sale. The book sale is April 27-28.  In addition to the books, there will be a George Foreman Grill available for raffle as well as merchandise for sale, raffle tickets for the quilt raffle, and crocks.

 Budget. Liz Heim and Joyce Hendrick worked as a sub-committee to construct a 2007 budget.  The sub-committee moved the acceptance of this 2007 budget; the motion was seconded by Emily Johnson.  The motion carried.

 Pennsylvania Library Association, West Branch.  The Library Association, West Branch, is sponsoring a series of events for all librarians, friends, and sponsors: one is March 14 from 5:30-7:30 at Front Street Station and another is April 27 from 9 AM – 3 PM at the Pennsylvania College of Technology.  The focus for the April 27 event is Topics and Trends in Library Design.

 Joyce Bilger moved and Liz Heim seconded a motion to donate $250 toward the cost of the socials and workshops sponsored by the Pennsylvania Library Association, West Branch.  After some discussion, the motion passed.

 TreeFest.  Barbara McGary reported on the possibility of making books available for sale at TreeFest.  Borders offers a % off for large volume purchases and also allows return privileges.  This information may be revisited as we discuss TreeFest at future meetings.

  • Joyce Hendrick received a letter of confirmation from The rev. Dr. Robert H. Pursel, All Saints Episcopal Church, for use of the church facilities for TreeFest.
  • We received a thank you note from the Board of the Snyder County Libraries for our gift of $10,413.
  • We received a thank you from the staff for the gift certificates.
