Minutes of the October 10, 2007 meeting of Friends of the Library Attending were as follows: Joyce Hendricks, Lynn Askew, Emily Johnson, Janis Gemberling, Liz Heim, Joyce Bilger, Barbara McGary, Pat Hess, Patty Gaugler, Grace Housley Joyce Hendricks called the meeting to order. The minutes were distributed and reviewed. Liz moved to approve the minutes with a correction to show Joyce Hendricks handled publicity for "Inside Pennsylvania". Lynn seconded and the motion was carried. There was no report from the Vice President. Janis distributed the Treasurer's Report. The sale of tickets for the Quilt was discussed. Only $495 was received at the Street Fair. Income from the Quilt Raffle fluctuates. There was discussion about whether the Quilt raffle should be continued since this year's net income was the lowest in the 7 years of the project. The group agreed that it should continue but the income from next year's sales should be compared with previous years‚ to support a decision after next year's sale. Patty moved that the report be approved and Joyce Bilger seconded. The motion was carried. Lynn reported for the Library Board. Tickets for the Wine and Cheese event are being sold. She asked for volunteers to provide more refreshments for the event. She gave Brenda Mull an SU crock for her continuing support of the Friends of the Library. She said that there is no news on the estimate of the cost of building a road for the property in question for a new library. Barb reported for the Library System. She applied for a Libri Foundation Grant for Children's resources for all 4 libraries. We received the grant of over $1000. She had spoken with Deb who says that all is ready for the Thrivent grant to match the money received for the Quilt Ticket Raffle. Barb is applying for the "Mother Goose on the Loose" best practices award. The library is sponsoring many programs in October including:
A free retirement planning workshop on the 16th Pam brought with her a number of publicity contacts which have proved useful in promoting the programs, particularly the Daily Item's "What's Going On Here" column. There are plans to bring the pre-school group to Tree Fest. The Polaris receipt printer is here but has not yet been installed. Hopefully it will be available for Tree Fest. Joyce reported 577 orders for the Rolling Green crock. A local company has offered to go for the crocks. Pat, Grace and Lynn reported on the SU crocks: 29 sold at Homecoming, 21 sold by Lynn. Order forms are being distributed; Lynn has 10 orders at home. Someone suggested that we check with the potter on a monthly basis to find out how many orders he is filling directly. Only 6 packages of note paper were sold at Homecoming. Emily has placed note paper at the Selinsgrove Inn and Pottinger B&B. She will ask other businesses on Market Street to display and sell them. There were 37 sets remaining after the Street Fair and 70 additional sets were produced. They also will be sold at Tree Fest. Crocks and Note paper will be sold on Family Weekend at SU. Patty asked if ordered pencils were ordered to sell at Tree Fest. Liz ordered them. We will also be selling books at Tree Fest, 10 copies of 10 books. We will purchase them from Walden Books who will give us a 20% discount (our profit) and will take back any that we do not sell. Liz asked that FOL spend up to $1,500 to buy books from Walden. Joyce B. moved. Emily seconded. The motion carried. Barb is making recommendations of which books to buy. Barb and Joyce H. will be visiting the local Chamber of Commerce at their lunch meeting on Oct. 23 to talk about Library activities. Liz reported that the newsletter will be ready about November 1. Lynn and Patty are to receive an award at Penn State for the newsletter. Joyce H. brought up old business for discussion of giving a gift certificate to Rod Reis and Don Housley in gratitude for their help with the crocks. A certificate for each for them for $100 to be used at Irenes was suggested. Joyce B. moved and Liz seconded. The motion carried. Liz moved that we renew membership in the Friends of the Library USA which will cost $65. Lynn seconded. The motion carried. Janis will send in the check. Barb reported that there are to be two vacancies on the Library Board.
