“New Business” in the November minutes be amended to show that the
nomination of Janis Gemberling to the position of treasurer was
accepted. Lynn Askew moved and Emily Johnson seconded the motion that
the minutes from the November meeting be approved with the above
correction. The motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report. Janis Gemberling distributed the Financial
Statement through 11/30/07, reporting a checking account balance of
$21,862.83. Linda Wieder moved and Pat Reiland-Hess seconded a motion
that the treasurer’s report be accepted. The motion passed.
Library Board Liaison’s Report: Lynn Askew advised that with
Thrivant funds, the library will realize approximately $2,000 from the
Art and Wine Festival.
Library Report: Barbara McGary presented a Selinsgrove Library
Director’s Report 2007. Some highlights were:
- The Libri Foundation Grant – The
library was able to order over $1,064 worth of award winning
children’s books (71 books); the Friends contribution was $350; the
balance was paid by the Libri Foundation grant. Book plates will be
placed in all books stating the books are a donation of the Friends
of the Selinsgrove Library and the Libri Foundation. The library
will host an open house to celebrate the books after they have
arrived and been processed.
- Holiday Open House – on Friday 12/15/07
to honor Pam Ross, the new Executive Director. A tour of Tree Fest
will follow the party.
- One Book, One Community – The Friends
are invited to participate in the 2008 One Book, One Community
initiative. There is an organization meeting on 1/9/08 at 1:00 p.m.
at the Montgomery House Warrior Run Public Library in McEwensville.
An additional three libraries (Bucknell, SU and Public Library for
Union County) will join the five that participated several years
ago.
- Special Opportunities – Susan
Pannebaker of Commonwealth Libraries visited Tree Fest this year
(she had her picture taken with the library polar bear); Tree Fest
will go on the state report this year!
Crocks: Grace Housley advised that
approximately 100 SU crocks have been sold. Linda Wieder advised that
almost all the Rolling Green crocks are gone (a total of 700 were
ordered). Two more pickup dates have been arranged. We should know the
total number of crocks sold by the end of December.
Merchandise: We will know more about the sale of merchandise
after final figures have been determined for Tree Fest.
Publicity: The Daily Item published a good
Tree Fest article the first week of Tree Fest; they also had a video on
their website. Joyce Hendricks will send pictures of Tree Fest winners
and activities to the Daily Item Scrapbook.
Tree Fest: To date we have exceeded (with three days yet to go)
last year’s attendance with 1064 attendees, of which 455 have been
children in various scheduled special groups including the library’s
pre-school story hour group.
New Business:
- Library 2008 Wish List (copy attached
to and made a part of these minutes) – Liz Heim made a motion,
seconded by Emily Johnson, that the Friends fund the Selinsgrove
Community Library Wish List 2008 in its entirety ($12,000). The
motion carried.
- Review of Annual Report – Attendees
reviewed the 2007 annual report prepared and distributed by Joyce
Hendricks.
- Purchase of a Certificate of Deposit –
A suggestion was made that we purchase a CD to be set aside
specifically for the library building fund. This will be discussed
at the next meeting (January 9th).
- Treasurer – Liz Heim advised that the
Friends Board had approved the nomination of Janis Gemberling for
the officer position as Treasurer. She asked if there were any
nominations for Treasurer from the floor. In the absence of same,
the acting secretary cast a unanimous ballot to elect Janis
Gemberling to a two year term as Treasurer expiring December 31,
2009.
Miscellaneous Items:
- Quilt Raffle – The group agreed that
Friends should have another quilt raffle in 2008.
- Book Sale – We will consider having a
standard, unchanging time for our annual book sale.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
The next meeting will be held Wednesday, January
9, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. in the Borough Council chambers.
Respectfully submitted,
Elizabeth S. Heim
Acting Secretary
Wish List
2008
Selinsgrove Community Library
$12,000
My vision
for 2008 is to make our current library the best possible!
$3,000
Summer Reading
$3,000 is
needed to fund our summer reading program. Last year 3,000 books were
read by children in our community because the Friends of the Library and
community businesses cared enough to sponsor our reading program.
$500
Family Place
$500 is
needed annually to provide yearly upgrades to our Family Place as part
of our preschool connection grant. Upgrades will include new materials
for our pre-reading learning stations, books, free play materials and
program expenses.
$3,000
Adult Collection Materials
$3,000 is
needed to enable us to purchase multiple copies of best selling titles.
Each month, long hold lists are created for new best selling fiction.
Purchasing more than one copy of these popular titles will help to meet
the demands of our vivacious readers!
$1,500
Discovery Backpacks
$1,500
will purchase 15 discovery backpacks and backpack holder for children to
check out at the library. Discovery backpacks have books, activities,
learning materials for pre and primary school children. They each
explore themes such as music, bugs, telling time, feelings, art etc.
$1,100
Senior Information Center
$1,100 is
needed to create a new information center display for our senior
patrons. Important federal updates, local events, and new resources
will be available in this new information center.
$2,000
Periodical Storage & $900 Newspaper Storage
$2000 is
needed to purchase new furniture to house our current periodicals and
$900 is needed to purchase new furniture to house newspapers. Currently
