Tree Fest of Children's Books 2010

and the winners are...

1st Place Tree - "One Thousand Paper Cranes - the story of Sadako and the Children's Peace Statue", created by Zachary and Magdalene Frey and Mary Schmoyer
2nd Place Tree - "I Love Bugs", created by Agapeland Preschool
Favorite Wreath - "How the Camel Got Its Hump" created by The Fulmers

Friends of the Selinsgrove Community Library will donate a children's book of the library's choice to the library for their permanent children's book collection on behalf of each of the three winners shown above.  A bookplate will be placed in each book commemorating the decorator's winning place.

We expect that the cold weather plaguing the area during this year's Tree Fest played a part in reducing attendance to 750+.  This 750 included 240 children who attended in connection with special bookings (school classes, etc.).  Four school classes had to cancel because the temperature was too low to allow children to walk to the event.

The net profit of $1,364 from Tree Fest has been donated to the library and will help fund Snyder County Libraries 2011 Summer Reading Program, which is available to all children in Snyder County.

The library’s December pre-school story hours were held at Tree Fest with community members reading to the kids.  This is always a hit with the children and their family members.

Many people work together to make Tree Fest such a wonderful community event.  Selinsgrove Area Rotary Club gave us hours of volunteer help during setup and Kohl's Department Store’s A-Team provided 15 hours of volunteer help during clean-up, and a $500 grant through their community program which supports childhood literacy.  We’re deeply grateful to each and every person who volunteers time to help out – thank you all!

Each year one of the features of Tree Fest is the silent auction.  A number of decorators allow their creation to be auctioned to the highest bidder in a silent auction.  Visitors can browse Tree Fest and if their favorite tree or wreath is one of those available for auction, they can write a bid in the Tree Fest auction book.  The highest bidder gets to take home the exhibit at the end of Tree Fest.  This feature of Tree Fest not only raises money for the library, but allows visitors to obtain a beautifully decorated tree or wreath for their holiday enjoyment.  Click here for details on the 2009 Silent Auction.

There are so many people involved in making Tree Fest a success and our thanks go to all those who participated in this terrific event!
