Tree Fest of Children's
Books 2005 Friends of the Selinsgrove Community Library presented the 2nd annual Tree Fest of Children’s Books from December 3rd -16th, 2005 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Selinsgrove. Approximately 800 people, including 300 school children in separately scheduled sessions, flocked to view the 23 decorated trees and 9 wreaths. Tree Fest 2005 proved even more successful than Tree Fest 2004 in terms of number of visitors and funds raised for the Selinsgrove Community Library. Tickets were sold to allow visitors to vote for their favorite tree/wreath. “There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly”, written by Simms Taback and decorated by the 3rd grade classes of Lynn Fiedler and Beth Snyder won 1st Prize Tree, while 2nd Prize Tree went to “A Wish to be a Christmas Tree” written by Colleen Monroe and decorated by Susquehanna Valley Reading Council. These winners received a certificate and prizes of $25 and $15 respectively. The winner of favorite wreath was “The Christmas Promise” by Susan Bartoletti, decorated by First Reformed U.C.C. in Sunbury. A certificate and a $10 prize were awarded. Elizabeth Heim and Jim & Barb Wirth each won a $25 cash prize drawn from vote tickets. Many decorators generously allowed their creations to be offered for silent auction and 15 trees/wreaths were sold at the close of Tree Fest by this method. Many thanks to those decorators who generously allowed the auctioning of their creations, with proceeds going to support Snyder County Libraries. The following creations were sold at silent auction raising almost $500: The Friendly Beast, Rainbow Fish, Pickles to Pittsburgh, A Wish to be a Christmas Tree, Waterbugs and Dragonflies, The Mouse Before Christmas, The Quilt Maker's Gift, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, Henner's Lydia, Alice in Wonderland, Snowmen at Night, If you Give a Pig a Pancake, Goodnight Moon, The Christmas Promise, The Elves and the Shoemaker. Tree Fest is a magical, joyful holiday event which appeals to all ages. Tree Fest involves the community in so many ways, from the creative, wonderful decorating efforts by community members, organizations and businesses through visits by members of the community enjoying this celebration of literacy. The funds raised from Tree Fest benefit the Selinsgrove Community Library which in turn supports and enriches the community. Friends of the Selinsgrove Community Library will donate a copy of each of the books featured in Tree Fest 2005 to the library’s permanent collection of children’s books.
